Jamie McMurray Announces “Drive for a Cure” Awareness Campaign
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Jamie McMurray hopes to create awareness and raise money for the Autism Society of America during his “Drive for a Cure” charity promotion announced Friday, April 2nd at Texas Motor Speedway.
Throughout the 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season, McMurray will donate $42 for every lap he leads to the Autism Society of America. In addition, the Joplin, Mo. native will donate $42 for every pole he wins in 2004.
CHARLOTTE, NC (March 23, 2004) – Richard Petty has announced that he will sub for son Kyle in Race for Hope. Due to a conflict with a recently scheduled test at Daytona International Speedway, Kyle Petty will not be in attendance for the May 25th event. Standing in for Petty will be his seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup Champion father, Richard Petty.
The logistics of the change are minor as fans who have already purchased tickets for Kyle Petty will now have the opportunity to meet Richard, NASCAR’s all time wins leader. There are still over 100 tickets available for the Richard Petty autograph session through the NASCAR SpeedPark ticket office at 1-877-626-8725. All proceeds from the event will go to The Autism Society of America and The Victory Junction Gang Camp.

CHARLOTTE, NC (March 12, 2004) -- Elliott Sadler announced his second annual charity event - Elliott Sadler’s Race for Hope - a venue which will support the Autism Society of America and also benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp.
Race for Hope will take place Tuesday, May 25th from 5-9pm ET at the Concord Mills NASCAR SpeedPark located at 8461-G1 Concord Mills Blvd. Concord, NC near Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Race for Hope will allow race fans the opportunity to race bumper-to-bumper on the exciting go-kart tracks with NASCAR drivers, obtain autographs and experience the ultimate race fan’s dream - to eat a private dinner with their favorite NASCAR driver. In his second annual charity event, Sadler hopes to surpass the $45,000 M&M’S Hoops for Hope raised last year - but will also add the Victory Junction Gang Camp to his list of benefactors. There will also be a silent auction on site to include items such as driver uniforms, helmets and sheet metal from NASCAR’s top teams.
Drivers who will join Elliott include Hermie Sadler, Dale Jarrett, Michael and Darrell Waltrip, Tony Stewart, Kyle Petty, Jamie McMurray, Casey Mears, Sterling Marlin, Martin Truex, Jr., and Jimmie Johnson. Partners for the May 25th event include NASCAR SpeedPark, M&M’S, Coca-Cola, The ACE & TJ Morning Show along with KISS 95.1 FM, and the University City Outback Steakhouse. Live entertainment will begin at 5pm with local bands and special quests.
Autism occurs in all races and socioeconomic classes - income, lifestyle, or education do not affect whether or not a child will be born with autism. It has become Elliott’s personal goal to be proactive in the effort to raise funding and awareness for this complex disorder.
The Victory Junction Gang Camp has also become important to Sadler because it involves one of NASCAR’s First Families - the Petty’s. The VJGC opens in June and is a medical camp for children and their families living with chronic or life threatening illnesses. The camp has been erected in honor of Kyle and Patti Petty’s late son Adam and to help to fuel ill children with memories that will sustain and inspire them.
“When Halie Dru was diagnosed with autism, it just broke all of our hearts,” explained Sadler. “She is one special little girl and as a family we have learned how to deal with this disability and help Halie live and learn every day. We are fortunate that she goes to a special school on a continuous basis throughout the year and I would like to reach out to those families that are less fortunate than mine by raising money and awareness.
“NASCAR is a big family and I certainly feel like my NASCAR family has supported me in this cause. We also wanted to give something to Kyle and Patti Petty’s Victory Junction Gang Camp because they have contributed so much to this sport.
“Partnering with the NASCAR SpeedPark was a natural match. We wanted to switch up the format this year so more fans could interact with the drivers - and get some up-close and personal time. The response I have had from my fellow competitors is almost overwhelming,” said Sadler.
As the newest spokesman, Sadler makes appearances at each NASCAR SpeedPark and is involved in the parks’ promotional material. The partnership of the NASCAR SpeedPark to host Race for Hope was a natural decision.
“We are delighted to be included in such great company as Elliott Sadler, M&M’s and the rest of the racing community during the efforts for the Race for Hope,” said Tommy V. Jones, Chief of Burroughs & Chapin Company’s Sports, Entertainment and Recreation Division. “More importantly, though, is how proud we are to help the Autism Society of America and the Victory Junction Gang Camp.”
