Dedicated Family Man, Dedicated Racer - In That Order

Although today, Hermie Sadler might not be as widely recognized as his younger brother, Nextel Cup series star Elliott Sadler, it wasn’t always that way.

When father Herman started both of his sons out on their racing careers in Emporia VA, it was Hermie blazing the way and Elliott following behind.

"I was a few years ahead of him and I started with go-kart racing, and then helped him start," said Hermie. "Then I started in Late Model Stocks, and we later built a car for Elliott and helped him get started there too."

"When he started running in the Busch Series, we prepared one of my cars and let him get some seat time there." Hermie said. "So we've kinda done things together more so than competing-wise and we try to keep it that way"

The family act reunited in the 1998 Busch series. It featured both Sadler brothers, this time as teammates. Both Hermie and Elliott were driving Chevrolets for Gary Bechtel's Diamond Ridge Motorsports Team.

"Yeah, we had a big family thing going on," said Elliott. "Family's always been a big deal for us."

Hermie especially enjoyed their on-track battles in the Busch Series. "It was great getting to be with him at tracks every week, going for the checkered flag," said Hermie. "But, I would be lying if I said racing against him was the same as racing against anybody else. I was more careful sometimes when we were side-by-side and I always gave him more room when I could."

2001 brought an unexpected turn of events for Hermie Sadler, the father. His daughter Halie Dru was diagnosed with Autism. Ever since, Hermie has been a tireless advocate for Autism awareness. "My No. 1 priority is to create awareness," he said. "Through awareness comes funds. Donations are important, but more than that we really want people to be aware of autism, what it is, and what we can do about it. There's no pill that my daughter can take that can help. Her pill is daily one-on-one treatment. She's making great progress." “We want people to know what autism is and what they can do. We want to show parents that may think their child is different in some way that help is out there.”

A relationship between Ford Motor Company and Hermie Sadler is a natural. Not only does brother Elliott Sadler pilot a Ford for Robert Yates Racing, Hermie also owns and operates two Ford Dealerships, one in Emporia Virginia and the other in Franklin, Virginia. On December 21, 2004 it was announced that the 1993 NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year will get the opportunity of a lifetime with a 2 year deal to drive the #66 Peak Fitness Ford, powered by Roush-Yates engines. This will mark his first full time Nextel Cup ride, a welcome change for Hermie, who has struggled to run limited schedules the past few seasons.

“This is very exciting for me and my family. To partner with a strong corporation like Peak Fitness, CEO Jeff Stec, and a proven winner like James Ince as crew chief is my best opportunity to make it in Nextel Cup racing. I will retain an interest in the new corporation, Peak Performance Motorsports, will continue to be involved in the daily operations and feel confident this team will surprise many people. Nobody knows what to expect from us, but Jeff Stec has a great vision for the future of the team and the announcement about our choice of car manufacturer and engine program is a clear indication of the level of commitment Jeff has made to the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series,” said Sadler.

Peak Fitness is the #1 health club in the Charlotte area and will launch its National Franchise Campaign in January 2005.
